A Review of... Peter Loves Penguin by David McPhail

Peter Loves Penguin was a spontaneous addition to our library basket. We had technically reached my self imposed limit when I noticed the title and adorably sweet cover. It's a well loved book with dented edges and the back page is beginning to fall off. Having read it now, I can understand why.

I'm obsessed with the illustrations. That perfect blend of realism and child-like just hits some sweet spot from my own childhood books. The writing itself is simple, yet adorable as well.

This lovely little story is about two best friends, Peter and Penguin, and how they spend their snow day. Waking up, they get dressed for the day, then go outside to play in the snow.

They have a snowball fight, then decide to make a huge snowman. It's taller than either of them, but working together, they finish make it perfect! The willingness to help just really shows how friends should act towards each other, always willing to lend a helping hand. Together, you can make something wonderful! After they finish, the day is nearing end and they're getting cold. They go inside to share some dinner, and then sit by the fire.

This end page is my favorite illustration in the whole book. I love the cozy green chair, the fire in the fireplace, the snowman they built in the window. If I could live in any story, I think I would be tempted to choose this one. What better way to end a wonderful day.

We so enjoyed this perfectly happy little book, and I look forward to reading more of David McPhail's books. Apparently he's written a few like it, Ben Loves Bear, and Bella Loves Bunny, that I shall have to look for at my library. He is a New York Times bestselling illustrator and has done the art for over a hundred other books for children.
